It is a time-axis diagnostic: not whether users hit value, but how long it takes them. For product-led growth in particular, time to value SaaS teams measure as the single best leading indicator of D30 retention — a slow median compounds into churn before the renewal cycle even starts.

Our engine grades the typical user (median p50) against four bands. Sub-10 minutes is elite — the territory of Slack, Notion, and Linear, where product value lands in the first session. TTV (time to value) is the broad journey from signup to value. TTFV (time to first value) zooms into the first concrete moment of value — Slack’s framing was “2,000 messages received in a team”, which is when a Slack workspace becomes useful, not when the first message is sent. Time-to-Aha is usually the first meaningful action, like that first message sent. TTFV typically runs 2–10× longer than Time-to-Aha because it is the outcome, not the input.

When a calculator says it measures “time to first value”, it is reporting the duration to the outcome. When it says “time to first action”, it is reporting the duration to the trigger. Either is valid — pick one, document it, instrument it consistently. The aha event field in this tool is your label for whichever flavor you have chosen; the math is identical.

The math is straightforward. For each user, compute aha_event_timestamp − signup_timestamp, in minutes. The cohort’s TTFV is the distribution of those deltas. From the sorted list, extract the percentiles using linear interpolation between adjacent samples (Hyndman-Fan type 7 — the same definition Excel and NumPy use): p25 at the 25th-percentile rank, p50 at the median, p75 at the 75th, p90 at the 90th. Report all four. The mean is not in this list because the mean is not a useful summary statistic for a heavy-tailed duration distribution.

Two summary statistics matter beyond the raw percentiles. Tail ratio = p90 / p50, which detects a failing user segment when it climbs past 8×. IQR = p75 − p25, which measures dispersion in the body of the distribution. A tight distribution (low IQR, low tail ratio) means treatments will lift the median cleanly; a long-tail distribution means the next intervention is segment-specific, not blanket.
